Tamborine Mountain and Springbrook groundwater
The Tamborine Mountain and Springbrook communities have raised concerns about local water security. We are working with those communities to better understand their current and future water needs as well as to better understand how their groundwater aquifers function.
This information will feed into the long-term plans for the resources as part of the Minister’s report on the Logan and Gold Coast water plans, which are scheduled to be finalised in mid-2021.
A moratorium notice (PDF, 136.1KB) was published on Thursday 5 March 2020, commencing Friday 6 March 2020.
This means that no new groundwater bores can be constructed on Tamborine Mountain and Springbrook for at least a year – except for farming and household use – while further research and more community engagement about water needs are prioritised.
The moratorium provides exemptions for households, farming and town supply. Read the moratorium notice (PDF, 136.1KB) for details, including for exemptions.

Water use information
A notice (PDF, 31.0KB) was published on Friday 1 May 2020.
We will be collecting information from commercial water users to improve our understanding of groundwater use and needs in Tamborine Mountain and Springbrook.
Water use reports will be due monthly, within 10 business days following the end of each month.
As a result of the COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings, the April drop-in sessions were cancelled.
We are continuing to work with the Gold Coast and the Scenic Rim councils to identify and contact water users to ensure they are able to accurately and easily report their water use data.
Please contact us if you would like to arrange a video conference with a departmental officer at a time that’s convenient for you.
Reporting water use
If you are required to report your water use you will first need to register your bore information.
Once registered, you will get a reminder at the start of each reporting period.
