Strategic water infrastructure plan

The Strategic water infrastructure plan (SWIP) will provide a coordinated view of the forward pipeline of bulk water projects and identify where the Queensland Government is placing its efforts and funding for the next 10-15 years.

This will enhance strategic planning work already underway across the state by bringing together information about programmes concerning bulk water initiatives being developed by government owned corporations, statutory authorities and other proponents.

The SWIP will provide a programmatic view and pipeline of bulk water infrastructure projects that represent what the Qld government sees are a priority for delivery into the next 10-15 years to meet water needs and present the best value for money.

The SWIP will provide an overview of new and emerging priority projects across four categories:

  • dam safety and improvement
  • urban water security
  • regional economic development
  • commercial projects.

How the SWIP is developed

The SWIP works with the Queensland Water Strategy. Together these replace the 'Queensland bulk water opportunities statement' (QBWOS).

The SWIP will bring together information from sources across relevant Queensland entities to create a cohesive view of planned and emerging bulk water infrastructure and will incorporate other planning and assessment work underway including the Regional Water Assessments.

We will complete the SWIP in 2024.
