Australia's Disability Strategy 2021-2031

The launch of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021–2031 aims to improve the lives of 4.4 million Australians with disability – including almost 1 in 5 Queenslanders.

The strategy has been developed by all levels of government in consultation with people with disability, their families, carers and representatives. The voices of more than 3,000 generous people and organisations have informed development of the strategy and its priorities.

Over the next decade, the strategy will drive initiatives to ensure greater inclusion and participation of people with disability in all areas of Australian life including employment, housing, education and health and wellbeing.

What we are doing

The strategy reaffirms Queensland’s commitment as part of national efforts to enhance opportunities for people with disability and shift community attitudes to enable full inclusion and accessibility.

Queensland’s Disability Plan 2022–27: Together a better Queensland supports delivery of the strategy’s priorities and guides our continued actions to improve the lives of Queenslanders with disability.

We are also undertaking a wide range of actions that focus on improving outcomes in the priority areas of employment, community attitudes, early childhood, safety and emergency management.

Before Australia’s Disability Strategy

Prior to Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021–2031, all levels of government collaborated to develop and implement the National Disability Strategy 2010–2020.

The National Disability Strategy was Australia’s first overarching framework for disability reform and laid the groundwork for all levels of government to work together to improve the lives of people with disability.

Queensland developed and implemented multiple state disability plans throughout the life of the National Disability Strategy. The most recent was All Abilities Queensland: opportunities for all – State Disability Plan 2017–2020.

On 3 January 2022, the Commonwealth Government published the National Disability Strategy Final Progress Report 2017–2021, which is the last report under the National Disability Strategy.
