Burnett Basin water plan review calls for community contributions

29 April 2024

Water users in the Burnett Basin communities are invited to have their say on the area’s water plan as the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water (DRDMW) begins drafting a new water plan.

Submissions close 28 June 2024.

DRDMW South Region Executive Director Hamish Butler said public feedback is a crucial part of the routine water planning process in Queensland and will help ensure the Burnett Basin region’s unique environment, social and cultural values, and future economic growth opportunities are supported.

“The department replaces or renews water plans in Queensland every 10 years or so and our first and absolutely essential step in doing so is community consultation,” Mr Butler said.

“It’s really important we get all relevant views and input because a water plan is in place for a long time and must reflect an understanding of the needs and challenges of a diverse range of water users, cultural values and the environment.”

Underpinned by community consultation, the new water plan will also use the best available science and information, including hydrologic, socio-economic, cultural and environmental assessments.

Key issues will be considered throughout the review and replacement including current and emerging interests of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples; the latest knowledge on climate change; the effectiveness of existing water plan outcomes, measures, strategies and performance indicators.

The Burnett Basin water plan area covers about 38,370 square kilometres (or an area about half the size of Tasmania) and is home to some of Queensland’s most significant natural fauna such as the Australian lungfish and habitats within the Coalstoun Lakes, which is listed as a nationally important wetland area.

As a region also known for its valuable industry, tourism and agriculture, including sugar cane, macadamia production and grazing, the water plan consultation process provides an important opportunity for the community to share feedback, as well as understand more about water plan development, discuss issues and new options, and ultimately help to improve the plan.

“I encourage communities in the Burnett Basin water plan area to take the time to connect with us, get involved and have their voices heard in the development of this new water plan,” Mr Butler said.
