Proposed amendments to the Fitzroy Basin water management protocol

Construction of Rookwood Weir is well underway and due for completion in 2023.

You are invited to have your say on proposed amendments to the Fitzroy Basin water management protocol (PDF, 2.6MB) to support the operation of Rookwood Weir.

These amendments are required to support the Rookwood Weir Water Supply Scheme (the WSS) and operational rules currently being developed through public consultation led by Sunwater.

The proposed amendments will:

  • specify volumes of unallocated water available for new supplemented water allocations within the WSS
  • include new water allocation dealing rules and zones within the WSS
  • amend the announced period rules for existing unsupplemented water allocations located in the Fitzroy River.

The proposed amendments will not change the water taken from the Fitzroy River by existing supplemented and unsupplemented water allocation holders.

Get involved

The department is working alongside Sunwater to deliver these important next steps to help bring Rookwood Weir to completion and deliver great opportunities for Central Queensland.

As part of our consultation on the proposed operational rules for the WSS and the supporting water management protocol, we will be holding a series of local information sessions. Visit Sunwater’s project page for details on the timing and locations of these sessions.

To raise concerns, discuss the proposed operating rules, or submit feedback, contact Sunwater’s Rookwood Weir Project hotline on 1800 423 213 or email Rookwood.weir@sunwater.com.au.

Consultation closes 10 October 2022.

Next steps

Amendments to the Fitzroy Basin Water Management Protocol must:

  • be consistent with the outcomes and measures of the Water Plan (Fitzroy Basin) 2011
  • achieve the water allocation security objectives
  • achieve the environmental flow objectives
  • be developed with adequate consultation with affected persons.

Once finalised and approved by the department, a statement of changes to the water management protocol will be published with the amended Fitzroy Basin Water Management Protocol.
